Fly Away with Me

Date Posted: 07.23.07

Fly Away With Me

Bluebird of happiness,
Fly away with me.
Drag me from a shattered past,
Of crushing soul debris.

Fly me up, beyond my bones
To where the air is thin.
Let me scream, or laugh or cry
Or curse the fates cruel whim.

Hold me high above my lack,
Of all Ill never know.
Let me see the might-have-beens,
Lying dead below

Guide me through, to my past
Unite me with my soul
Let me seek. Let me find.
Let goodness make me whole.

Bring me over, past the sky,
To where the air is none.
Let me live. Let me die.
Let me come undone.

Bluebird of happiness,
Fly away with me.
Fly forever, never tire,
Until I come to be.

Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

Date Posted: 07.22.07

Naturally I read the new Harry Potter book. Indeed, I planned a whole day of it. I had wonderful cheesy, steak nachos and jelly belly beans for desert. I had vodka/lemonade slushies I bought myself a bright shiny new lime green raft for the pool. I was set! Then of course the boys who have been helping me with the house didn't leave until after 3. Then it started to storm. Its kind of hard to read a book while floating on a raft in a pool in a rainstorm, so I retired to my patio where I camped out for the rest of the evening and read the whole thing in one greedy gulp.

I know I shouldn't have read it all at once. Normally I would try and pace myself with a new novel but I wanted a day of complete worthlessness and indulgence. I didn't get as much worthlessness as I wanted (see the part about boys helping with house renovations) but I did get some indulgence. I deserved it. It seems like all I ever do is work and it's summer! I am supposed to be off in summer. Harry Potter seemed like as good an excuse as any.

I have to admit that while I really do like Harry Potter it isn't even in my top 10 favorites. I feel compelled to loyally admit that if Orson Scott Card would just release a novel to connect his Ender series and Shadow series, as it is rumored he might, I will have to throw a full fledged super party for my little lonesome. There will probably be joy dancing and much clapping and shouting praises.

If you want to know what I thought of the Deathly Hallows keep on reading ...

Ishmael

Date Posted: 07.22.07

I just read the novel Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. It was given to me by a friend who has been after me to read it for almost a year. He insisted it was an excellent book. The friend in question is intelligent and interesting. It was reasonable you think we might like similar books…. This is not so much the case this time around.

The book has a somewhat amusing premise. I am all for anything with telepathic animals.

In a consumer society the product consumed by man in largest quantities is optimism (Merle 69).

Malevil

Date Posted: 07.11.07
Last Revision: 07.18.07

Malevil was written in 1975 by the French author Robert Merle (known for the book Day of the Dolphin) and translated into English by Derek Coltman.

The story begins in 1979. The main character of the novel is Emmanuel Comte, a well respected former school master and farmer in a small town in France. He builds his home and business around the restoration of a medieval castle called Malevil. Emmanuel and several of his friends are in the cellar of the castle bottling wine when a nuclear explosion scorches the countryside destroying their hometown and presumably the majority of the planet. The thick walls of Malevil provide protection for Emmanuel and his companions.

Beginning

Date Posted: 07.11.07

I am going to begin a new web journal.

I intend to write on a subject by subject rather than daily basis. I do not feel that a daily diary of my life would truly fill my purpose. I do not really need to rehash every experience in my personal life. I may include personal stories about my life in this journal, but that is not my primary intent at this moment (I could always change my mind). I intend to simply write about the things that interest me.

I would like to write fearlessly and candidly. I do not want to worry about offending my friends or colleagues. I live in a small, somewhat conservative community. I have a job that requires constant interaction with the public. I will probably write in more detail about my feelings on this subject at another time. For now, suffice to say that I need the privacy of anonymity.
